DMV urges online renewal for driver's licenses, ID cards

| April 25, 2025 1:00 AM

Many Idahoans may be eligible to renew their driver's licenses and ID cards online ahead of the REAL ID deadline May 7, according to the Idaho Division of Motor Vehicles.

Online renewals help reduce in-office wait times at locations that allow walk-ins, making it easier and more efficient for those who need a REAL ID (or Star Card) to complete their transactions, a press release said.

Many driver鈥檚 license offices operate on an 鈥渁ppointment only鈥 basis, and customers needing a REAL ID must visit an office in-person to complete the process.

There is a $5 discount for online driver license renewal transactions.

Renewals may be completed online if:

鈥 You are between 21 and 69 years old. Expiration date cannot exceed 70th birthday.

鈥 Your most recent renewal was 4 years or less.

鈥 You are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

鈥 You hold a valid Idaho Class D license or ID card, even if it is expired.

鈥 Your license has not been expired for more than 25 months.

鈥 You are not changing your name or adding/removing endorsements or restrictions.

鈥 You are not upgrading to a Star Card (REAL ID).

REAL ID/Star Card upgrades require an in-person visit with specific documents. Appointments can be made at dmv.idaho.gov under 鈥淒river鈥檚 License/ID Cards.鈥
