* This article has been updated to reflect that there are no wildcard bids for relays in the state’s 5A classification.
TRACK & FIELD
COEUR d'ALENE — Senior Noah Roark won the high jump, senior Van Lee won the pole vault, and both the °ÄÃŲ©²Ê¹ÙÍø High girls and boys track & field teams find themselves in third place after the first day of the 5A Inland Empire League District 1-2 Championships held Thursday at Coeur d'Alene High.
Roark cleared 5 feet, 2 inches in the girls high jump, a new personal best that is tied for No. 2 in school history. Lee cleared 13 feet, 3 inches in the pole vault to capture gold. He currently ranks as No. 2 in state's 5A classification with his personal best vault of 13 feet, 9 inches set last week during a dual against Lake City.
Lee, junior Isaac Schmit, junior Maverick Gomez and sophomore Trey Blumenberg broke their own school record once again in the 4x200 relay, grabbing a silver medal with a blistering fast time of 1:28.65. Despite not receiving the automatic bid to state, the next best time across all districts that didn't receive an automatic bid, qualifies. Currently, the Bulldogs' 4x200 relay time ranks as No. 3 in the state's 5A classification, which puts them in a good position to receive that wildcard bid.
In the shot put, sophomore Damian Porter punched his ticket to state, placing first with a mark of 139 feet, 5 inches. Junior Matthew Kunde trailed right behind, also qualifying for next week's 5A state meet, tossing a personal best of 138 feet, 10 inches to finish second. Kunde also threw a personal best of 43 feet, 0.5 inches in the shot put to place fifth overall.
Sophomore Shooter Jones placed third in the triple jump (41 feet, 6 inches) and was fifth in the long jump (19 feet, 10 inches) while freshman Kai Budensiek added a sixth-place finish in the 3200-meter run with a new personal best time of 10:26.31 to round out the boys' top day one finishes.
On the girls' side, junior Izzy Davidson cleared 10 feet even to win the pole vault while junior Hope Bares took second, clearing a tied for personal best of 9 feet, 6 inches. Davidson's height of 10 feet, 3 inches at the Christina Finney Co-ed Relays earlier this season ranks as No. 4 in the state's 5A classification while Barnes' clear of 9 feet, 6 inches ranks as No. 6.
Barnes, Roark, junior Ani Vick and sophomore Elizabeth Storms produced a second-place finish in the 800-meter sprint medley relay with a time of 1:54.10. The time ranks as No. 8 in the state's 5A classification.
Junior Jetta Thaete clinched an automatic state bid in the shot put, finishing second with a hurl of 34 feet, 5 inches. She also recorded a third-place finish in the discus with a mark of 105 feet, 5 inches.
Sophomore Vivian Haag was sixth in both long jump (15 feet, 2 inches) and triple jump (30 feet, 10 inches) while sophomore Abigail Eldore ran to a sixth-place finish in the 3200-meter run (13:25.23) to round out the Lady Bulldogs' day one results.
Action resumes today at Lewiston High starting at 2 p.m.

SOFTBALL
Lady Bulldogs' season ends with a fight
Lakeland 14, °ÄÃŲ©²Ê¹ÙÍø 8
RATHDRUM — Senior Baylie Hindle went 2-for-4 with a double and three-run home run as the visiting No. 3 Lady Bulldogs were defeated by the No. 2 Lady Hawks in a 5A Inland Empire League District 1-2 loser-out game held Thursday at Lakeland High.
Down 6-0 after the first two innings, °ÄÃŲ©²Ê¹ÙÍø put up a 4-spot in the third inning to stay in the game. The Lady Bulldogs scored on four straight plate appearances, with an RBI single from senior Bailey Lancaster, who had two hits in the contest, being the highlight of the rally.
In the fifth, trailing 9-4, Lancaster hit her second single of the night, as did freshman Bailey Wilson, and Hindle smashed a home run ball to deep left field to cut the deficit to two runs. The Lady Bulldogs plated another run in the sixth, but Lakeland's pair of back-to-back RBI doubles in the bottom of the fifth prevented a comeback.
Freshman Marlee Stevens, who also had two hits in the contest, pitched five innings in relief, striking out seven batters over five innings on the rubber as she did everything she could to will the Lady Bulldogs to a win.
"I thought we showed that we have grit and fight," °ÄÃŲ©²Ê¹ÙÍø High head coach Leah Platt said. "We are not going to give up or back down, we are going to keep digging in. We grew a lot as a team this season and will definitely miss our seniors, they have led with pride and heart and had a positive influence of the team. Their leadership isn't just for now, it is planting seeds long after they are gone."Ìý
Freshman Avery Inge and junior Arah Stevens also knocked singles for °ÄÃŲ©²Ê¹ÙÍø, which finishes the season at 7-20. The seven wins are the most by the program since 2021, when the team finished 9-17.
"Our underclassmen stepped up in a big way this year, taking on important roles and performing in high pressure situations — doing it with grace and maturity beyond their years," Platt said. "Knowing these young ladies, they are going to work in the offseason and come out even stronger next year."
